The title of the Daodejing (or Tao te Ching) might be usefully rendered The way the universe works, for Laozi taught that people should ignore the pressures of society and align themselves to the underlying pattern of the universe. Indeed this underlying pattern of the universe is possibly the best understanding of the word Dao.
