The Creed, its title derived from the Latin Credo ("I believe"), became part of the Mass in the 8th century under Charlemagne, though it had already formed part of the eastern liturgy for 200 years. It was not until the early 11th century that the Credo became part of the Roman Mass, placed after the Gospel and before the Offertory, its position today. This CD features nine versions by Haydn, Mozart, Pachelbel and other composers, plus other liturgical works.
