Fado is a musical synthesis of the varied influences that have affected the Portuguese people throughout the ages. The term fado is derived from the Latin word fatum (inescapable destiny). This is intense music that is rich with emotions of regret and desire. It is at times nostalgic, sensual and fatalistic - and sometimes all three. Traditionally, the singer soloist, man or woman (fadista) is accompanied by two guitarists. These 23 tracks sample some of the finest Fado recordings from 1925 to 1945.
