Right from the first composition, his own Hotel Me, Gil Evans puts the piano to use not only for melody but also as a percussion instrument - ably backed by Billy Cobham on cymbals and Mike Mainieri on vibraphone. Free of the constraints of strict time, the music seems to float. Jimi Hendrix's Stone Free is followed by a waltz, and even the cameraman zooms in on the music stand for proof. An exceptional evening, conducted by an extraordinary musician.
